How to change a custom variable value

You can easily manage your variables according to your business needs. In this article, we will show you how to create variables and change their values in a fast and simple way.

Create a custom variable for the Contact List

Step-by-step instructions:

  • Select the Contact List domain from the drop-down menu (in the lower-left corner)  if there are several domains in the account.

  • Navigate to the Contact List Management page (Menu -> Audience -> Lists).

  • Select the Contact List and enter it by clicking on its name.

  • Click the “Add variable” button.

  • Fill out the name of the custom variable in the “Name” field. 

    • NOTE: We recommend that you give your custom variables simple and meaningful names to avoid possible difficulties with their search.
    • IMPORTANT: Max 50 characters. Use only Latin letters, numbers, and “_”
  • Specify the type of your custom variable and set its type to “String” or “DateTime”.

  • Press the “Create variable” button.

Variable types

String

Variable name in lowerCamelCase format.

WARNING: Please use only Latin lowerCamelCase format. No numbers or other symbols are allowed. String variable value in 'ENUM_STRING'

DateTime

For Variable name, use only Latin in lowerCamelCase format, no numbers or other symbols are allowed.

For date variable value ENUM_DATE (YYYY- M-DD) is 'required'.

Change the custom variable value

Step-by-step instructions:

  • Select the Contact List domain from the drop-down menu (in the lower-left corner) if there are several domains in the account.

  • Navigate to the Contact List Management page (Menu -> Audience -> Lists).

  • Select the Contact List and enter it by clicking on its name.

  • Mark the checkbox next to the contact to open an additional action bar for him.

    • Select as many contacts as needed to change the custom variable value. 
    • You can also select all contacts on the page (mark the checkbox on the top of the Contact List) or all contacts in the Contact List (select all contacts on the page and the “Select all contacts in the list” option).
  • Select the “Change variable value” option.

  • Select the previously created custom variable from the drop-down menu.

  • Write the variable value that will be applied to all selected contacts.

  • Press the “Add another variable” to open an additional field for another custom variable to choose.

    • You can manage as many custom variables as you have at the same time.
  • To delete the custom variable from the variables management popup click on the “Trash” button.

  • Press the “Save” button.

Delete the custom variable

Step-by-step instructions:

  • Select the Contact List domain from the drop-down menu (in the lower-left corner) if there are several domains in the account.

  • Navigate to the Contact List Management page (Menu -> Audience -> Lists).

  • Press the “More” button on the right side of the selected Contact List row.

  • Select the “Edit” option.

  • Press on the “Custom variables” tab.

  • Mark the checkboxes next to the custom variables you want to be deleted from the specific Contact List.

    • You can select all existing Contact List custom variables by marking the corresponding checkbox named “Select all”.
  • Press the “Delete” button.

  • Or you can take the same steps directly from the Contact list itself. First, enter the Contact List by clicking on its name, then press the “Manage list” button.

Priority in a case of conflicting variables:

  • First Priority: Variable from API request;

  • Second Priority: Variable from the Account Custom Variables;

  • Third Priority: Variable from the selected Contact List.
